Apple is currently holding a press conference to address the issues some customers are experiencing with the new iPhone 4. Steve Jobs himself is holding a presentation to address the “death grip” issues that have caused headaches for Apple the past few weeks. If you need a refresher on what went down, you can go here to read up on the issue and Apple’s initial response.
Here is the breakdown of what’s being addressed by Jobs right now:
1. Over 3 million iPhone 4′s have been sold since it launced 3 weeks ago.
2. The antenna issue is NOT unique to the iPhone 4. Steve Jobs demonstrates a similar issue with BlackBerry Bold 9700, Droid Eris, and a Samsung Omnia II.
3. Apple wants to make all their customers happy, even if the issue is affecting a very small number of customers. 0.55% of iPhone 4 users have called in about antenna or reception issues. The return rate for the iPhone 4 is currently at 1.7%, while the iPhone 3GS had a 6% return rate.
4. There is less than 1 more dropped call with the iPhone 4 than with the 3GS.
5. To solve the problem, Apple is going to give the customers a few options. First, the software update will fix the way the bars report. Second, each and every iPhone 4 user can apply on Apple’s website to receive a free case. There will be a few different choices for the case. If the customer is still not happy, they can return their undamaged iPhone 4 within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. This applies to every iPhone 4 purchased up until Sept. 30.
6. There could be some other updates in the future to address some issues with the proximity sensor.
That is the jist of the fixes for the antenna issue. There will be no massive recall like some expected, but customers do have options if they are unhappy with the problems they are experiencing.
So, did Apple relay fears and solve the problem with this press conference?
